Product Info for UNIPEL 1461

Downloads

UNIPEL 1461 is an oil base water resistant product for use as a post-treatment system on crust leathers. Full grain, unfinished leathers treated with UNIPEL 1461 will give consistently high flex values on both the Maeser and Dow Corning testing machines. Actual figures will depend very much on the crust, but 50,000 or more Maeser flexes are not unusual.
Another feature of UNIPEL 1461 is that, unlike silicone treated leathers, a piece will repeat the same flex level when it is dried out and re-tested. It can be applied by swabbing, curtain coater, seasoning machine or reverse roll coater. When applied to the grain surface a pleasant waxy feel will be imparted and due care should be taken when finishing this leather to ensure proper adhesion of the finish.
UNIPEL 1461 can also be applied to the flesh side after finishing which eliminate the problems associated with adhesion. On naked leathers UNIPEL 1461 will show excellent pull-up characteristics and a very pleasing fullness will be imparted to the leather. UNIPEL 1461 will cause the leather to darken slightly.

Vegetable tanned leather such as sole leathers, can also be treated with UNIPEL 1461. In this instance we recommend using a dip process which, when properly applied, will reduce water uptake using a static test method to below 30%. UNIPEL 1461 is a mixture of fatty acid reaction products and is considered non-hazardous.

SUGGESTED METHODS OF USE
UNIPEL 1461 as supplied is 100% solids and does not contain any solvents. It is not miscible with water. It is compatible with many solvents, the most popular being high flash petroleum naphtha (Stoddard Solvent, Mineral Spirits), Xylol or Chlorinated Solvents.

For most leathers the minimum effective amount of 14-16 g/ft² of UNIPEL 1461 by roller coater/curtain coater will give excellent flex values.
After application, and if UNIPEL 1461 is used with solvent, we recommend that the leather be thoroughly dried and aired off to remove all solvent before testing. This usually takes 2-3 days under normal drying conditions.
